Suffering From Allergies? CBD Might Help with some of the Symptoms!

‘Allergy season’ seems to be a thing of the past. For most people who suffer from allergies, they are not so much ‘seasonal’ anymore, as they are year round. Whether the weather is warm and sunny, or cold and windy, allergies are rampant in everyone – even those who have never struggled before. Allergies can ruin a day of fun activities, or make a normal work day a struggle to get through with watery and itchy eyes, wheezing, sneezing, congestion and headaches.

Standard allergy medications, nose sprays and decongestants can bring temporary relief for some. For others, they can barely make a dent on allergy symptoms, but the side effects of these medications seem to affect all who take them. Even the standard allergy medications – whether they are over the counter or prescribed – can make the sufferer drowsy and loopy making even the simplest of tasks not just terrible to complete, but can be quite dangerous if you are driving or if you work some sort of machinery for a living.

Many allergy sufferers are turning to CBD to help them cope with their struggle and are finding CBD can possibly curb the effect of allergic responses – bringing the much desired relief they have been searching for.

Ironically, allergies are the body’s way of protecting us from our environment. Each body reacts to an environmental “invader” differently. While some of us can virtually go through life with very little, if any issues, a lot of us are affected by many common things that come to mind when we think of allergies, like; dogs, cats and pollen, but many more of us are suffering from things we don’t even suspect would affect us, like; mold and dust.

When something like mold, dust or dander from an animal gets into your system, your body reacts by producing antibodies to attack the “invader.” These antibodies trigger chemicals in your body such as histamines, which bring on the familiar and annoying allergy symptoms like sneezing, congestion, itchy and watery eyes, clogged ears, inflammation, wheezing, coughing and even asthma.

An estimated 47% of the world’s population has varying degrees of responses to our environments. This is not a small number. This is almost half of the world’s population!

So, how can CBD help?

One of the main ways CBD can help with allergies is through potentially reducing the level of histamine released into your system (1). Preventing or reducing histamine release can make a huge difference for allergy sufferers. Histamine is released when triggered by the antibodies. One way CBD can help is by reducing the antibodies that trigger the histamine.

A study in 2009 found that cannabinoids (CBD) impaired activation of ‘mouse T-cells’ (a type of white blood cell) which are responsible for activating our antibody response and the increase of histamine. CBD showed to greatly reduce the antibody response by impairing the T-Cell activation and in turn, lessoning the allergy symptoms (2).

Another way studies have shown CBD can alleviate symptoms from allergies is by preventing and reducing inflammation which plays a big part in the overall discomfort from allergy symptoms. Studies have shown CBD can inhibit the inflammatory pathway, which greatly relieves some of the classic allergy symptoms like itchy eyes and nose, hives or any rashes.

CBD may relieve discomfort that can become a problem for people dealing with allergies, as well as to possibly help relieve anxiety and stress that can result from dealing with the symptoms. We don’t normally associate anxiety and stress with allergies but studies have shown that we produce more histamine when we are stressed.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, it’s important to treat the symptoms as soon as they begin and to not wait until your symptoms are out of control and keeping you from your daily activities and work.

*Please note:  if you suffer from extreme allergies or from an extreme allergic reaction, like anaphylaxis, which can result in very serious complications, it’s important to seek emergency help and speak with your doctor immediately about any and all medications you are taking.
